Newest Blogs in the Network 2-2-2009

Can the ailing global economy be linked to a profusion of new nature blogs? We’ve got 26 really remarkable sites across 7 categories to welcome to our ranks here. Please be gracious and visit each site… you’ll be glad you did:

BIRDS
The City Birder - I’ve been a fan of Rob Jett’s take on NYC birding for years. Rob shares his Red-tailed Hawks and other wildlife observations from around Brooklyn and the rest of the city.

Discovering Alpine Birds - Is this our first Austrian nature blog? Check out cool birding, frogging, mammaling and everything else-ing in the Alps of Tirol.

Counting Coots - I love the slogan of this wry blog out of West London: Patch birding, patchy photos. UK nature blogs can be so much fun to read.

A Misty Midnight’s Avalanche of Tornadic Madness (MMATM) - Wild title for a great blog. You’ll find plenty of landscapes, birds, flowers, wild animals and pets.

DDolan New Birder - This is the blog of a Texas birder who just started birding in March of 2008. He seems to be doing pretty well so far!

Stony Lake Birds - In the tradition of superb Canadian nature bloggers, these folks chronicle the birds seen around a lakeside home in central Ontario to celebrate the changing seasons.

Birding the Toledo Area and Beyond - We’re not talking about Spain here. This blog focuses on the birds and birding in NW Ohio and beyond.  Fans of Magee Marsh, Point Pelee and Whitefish Point should be sure to subscribe!

Recent Bird Reports From Quebec - Like the previous site, you pretty much know if you’re interested in following the latest rare and interesting bird sightings from Quebec, Canada. And yes, the site is bilingual!

ECOSYSTEM
Caroline at Coastcard [Land & Lit] - Here is a rich blog out of Wales featuring e-postcards of places with literary and wildlife associations. Quite charming.

The Lazy Lizard’s Tales - Another sweet Singaporean nature blog, this one offers explorations and sightings of Singapore’s rich biodiversity along with random musings on ecology and biology.

Cryptozoology Online: Still on the track - A collaborative blog documenting conservation, wildlife education, nature-study, and the hunt for unknown animals. Cryptozoology is technically a subset of nature study, right?

Wild Caramulo - Talented Nature and Wildlife Photography from the Caramulo Montain in Portugal. Worth a look for sure!

nature calling - Ramblings and peregrinations around a naturalist’s home in the Tennessee Valley. Very interesting.

Midmarsh Jottings - A record of the wildlife mainly around a Lincolnshire garden with bird feeders, pond and nestboxes with video cameras.

Family Nature Explorers - Join Nigel and his family in South Australia on their quest to discover the amazing array of nature that surrounds them everyday. Good stuff.

Owl and Bear: Green Pages - A good-looking general interest science and nature blog based in San Diego, CA.

Zoo  volunteer - Interesting articles on conservation, biogeography, and habitat restoration.

Neotropical Nature & Culture - Neotropical nature and culture… in other words, awesome.

Neotropica Photos - Pictures about Neotropic nature and culture… in other words. even better than the last listing, this one’s sister site. The photos are gorgeous.

FLORA
Florida’s Native and Naturalized Orchids - The title says it all. Photographs and other musings related to wild orchids growing in Florida.

HIKING & OUTDOORS
Kirigalpoththa - A walk through a magical island broadcast from the second highest point in Sri Lanka.

INSECTS & INVERTEBRATES
Bug Girl’s Blog - Among the mightiest of the bug blogs, this sensational site serves up entomology, gardening, nerdery, and rants.  Bug Girl (probably not her real name) loves insects and the ways in which they interact with our culture.

Myrmecos Blog - Another awesome insect blog. Dig the gorgeous ants, photography, and photography of ants!

Wild Light - And still another awesome insect blog! Portraits of the Wild World… a tour of the unseen and overlooked.

MAMMALS
Wild • Lives - A visual journal of encounters with wildlife on and off the trails. At the moment its mostly a bobcat journal (not a bad thing by any means!)

REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS
Turtle Tracks - A new blog following a naturalist’s work with Eastern Box Turtle conservation at Earthshine Lodge… and much more.
