Nature Blog Networking: Speak for the Trees

One of my favorite books as a child, and probably one that resonates for so many of us into our adulthood, is Dr. Seuss’ classic The Lorax.  That a simple rhyme can so elegantly and succinctly make an argument that effectively wraps up the ethos of the environmental movement for the past 30 years is pretty amazing.  And Dr. Seuss does it by focusing on what is perhaps the most visable aspect of the environment for most everybody.  We all want to speak for the trees, because they’re nice and, as the Lorax helpfully points out, they have no tongues.

The NBN has no shortage of members who take on that mantle proudly.  Who speak of the wonder of trunks and leaves and branches.  We can all enjoy Brown Bar-ba-loots and Swomee-Swans and the like, but for many, there’s nothing better than a few Truffala Trees, or whatever they happen to have in their backyard.

So while the trees prepare to bud and green in advance of spring, enjoy the best arboreal blogs the NBN has to offer…

Early Forest bills itself as the online community for detailed tree and arboretum photography.  It looks good to me and it’s a useful resource.

- Another great online resource for Eucalyptus cultivation is Eucalyptologics.  Especially useful if you’re looking to attract some Koalas to your yard, cause who isn’t?

- A trio of Portuguese language Brazilian blogs with a lot to say are Árvore em Nossas Vidas, Árvores de São Paulo, and Matas Ciliares e Reflorestamento.  I don’t speak Portuguese but the photos are nice, and it’s clear that Brazil certainly has the forests to support as many tree blogs as they can handle.

- Exploring the World of Trees seeks to do just that, with species accounts and trivia, or is that tree-via? (I’m here all week folks).

- Focusing on North American tree species comes Tree Notes, where Geneveive writes from Kentucky, a state where weather and trees don’t always coexist peacefully.

- Arbor Day is not far away in these parts, get prepared at the Arbor Day Blog from the Arbor Day Foundation, a non-profit that seeks to encourage people to celebrate trees.

- Jill and Jed’s Tree-mendous Adventure hails from the UK, where they search for Britain’s most ancient trees and encourage folks to protect them.

- A compendium of tree-related news from around the world, Take Cover is a one-stop shop for your tree media needs.  You’d never know how many current events have a tree angle.

- Is there as simple or apt a request as C’mon, Let’s Plant a Tree?  Full of paintings and stories of people planting and celebrating trees, is there a better way to end this list? I think not.

- Update – How could I forget Treeblog?  An unforgivable oversight as this post seems made for it!

Tree lovers abound on the NBN.  Tree bloggers are less obvious, but they fill a beautiful niche.  Enjoy these blogs!
