Nature Blog Networking: Isthmus Madness

We all know that the opportunity for great nature observation lies as close as our own backdoor or local patch.  And each and every one of us has a passion for our own little corners of the world that motivates us to continue sharing on our own little corners of the world web.   But who among us doesn’t yearn for the untrodden path too?  For the diversity of experiences that lie beyond county or state or country lines?  A big part of what makes our community so special is the opportunity to discover that diversity on each others blogs.  Political bloggers can write from anywhere and there’s scarcely a difference between the social networking scene in Detroit or Dublin or Dubai.  But nature bloggers?  Our diversity is our greatest strength.  Funny how that seems to mirror the natural world.

This threatens to go way off topic here, but what I mean to get at is that visiting some other-worldly place can be a once in a lifetime experience, but you can vicariously travel through the blogosphere daily.  And one of the finest places in the world for nature observation is that narrow strip of land that lies between North and South America.  A land where the ecosystems of the two great continents slam together like two spandex-clad professional wrestlers to the delight of the roaring crowd, that being us of course.  Fortunately, there are a handful of blogs to share this fantastic place with us, and they absolutely deserve your attention.

Though not technically part of Central America, Mexico is included in this group because of the strong cultural connections.  And the fact that there’s only one Mexican blog in the NBN and it’d never get featured otherwise.

- South of the border, down Mexico way you can find Jesuito, a spanish language blog with lovely photos of that nation’s fantastic plant-life.

-  I recently had the opportunity to do some birding in Guatemala, a fantastic country with real cultural and biological wonders.  Not that I needed a whole lot to get me excited but the Guatemala Birding Club‘s photos of nearly every bird species in the country nearly put me over the top.

- Guatemala has the distinction of being the bloggiest country in Central America with not one, but two active blogs.  Birdwatching in Guatemala has less eye-candy, but promises to be a great resource for birders looking to visit this burgeoning ecotourism destination.

-  The english-speaking country of Belize is well known for it’s fascinating rainforests and coral reefs. The blog South Englishtown Gazette chronicles the adventures of American ex-pats as they make the big move to Central America.

- The ex-pat adventure is a well-traveled route, as Jen of A New Life in Costa Rica knows well. Costa Rica is well-known ecotourism destination and the nation learned the value of tourist money early on for the benefit of not only those of us who love it, but the species that call it home too.

- The closer you get to South America the amazing the birds get.  Birding in Panama is not only a great resource for the birder who’s interested in visiting, but has some fabulous photos as well.

- Easily the best-known blog in Central America and a mainstay among plant bloggers is A Neotropical Savanna, where you can join Mary Farmer as she works to identify the plants she sees in Panama, a tall order to say the least!

For next week, I’m going to return to a topic that I’ve covered before, but one that should be important to everyone who is part of this community.  All of us who have a passion for the outdoors have a interest in making sure that outdoors is still there in the future.  For that reason, it’s crucial that we get the next generation hooked as well.   In addition to all of the great things I mentioned in the introduction, another is its accessibility to young people, and we have several young bloggers in the NBN that deserve our attention and support as much or more than anybody else.  So I’m going to try to give it to them.

Any young blogger out there (and I’m thinking undergraduate college or younger here) that would like to be included or fan of a young blogger who you think deserves the spotlight, drop me a line at naswick (AT) gmail (DOT) com.  This will be a fun one.

Til next week!
