Nature Blog Networking: Giving thanks for Canada

Yesterday was Thanksgiving in Canada.  I don’t really know what that means, but if it’s anything like Thanksgiving here in the US, then our friends to the north are celebrating with family and lots of food and giving thanks for another great year.  So with them in mind, I thought NBN would join in and give thanks for the wealth of fantastic NBN blogs of the Great White North.

It wasn’t that long ago that I looked at Canadian nature blogs, but in the intervening ten months the number of those blogs has more than doubled.  It makes sense really, there are few places in the world with such gorgeous natural vistas and wildlife. Canada is the second largest nation in the world and with only a quarter of the population of the United States, which means lots of nature, which means lots of nature blogs.  And I’ve got the list here, with hopefully no one left out.

Because there are so many, the lead-ins might be little short.  My apologies, but you won’t regret it if you click through.

- I’m always amazed by nature artists, especially those with as much talent as j.m. oudesluys.  there are some beautiful bird sketches here.

- It’s getting to the end of gardening season up north.  Find out how one garden turned out at Gardening Zone 3b.

- You have to forget Susan if she’s a bit Feather Brained.  She used to write to persuade people to buy things and finds nature writing much more satisfying.

- From the wide open plains of Saskatchewan comes Saskatchewan Birds, Nature and Scenery, a name that would be a mouthful if Saskatchewan wasn’t so much fun to say.

- Dave Ingram’s Natural History Blog is based in beautiful British Columbia, but he gets around and takes great photos besides.

- As eager a cyclist as a birder, Bob from Tales of the Nishiki finds that birding on two wheels is just as productive as birding on two legs, or four wheels and an internal combustion engine for that matter.

- They speak French in Quebec, and they blog in it too.  Flora Urbana, however, transcends any language barrier with beautiful urban flowers.

- Hiking, photography, and outdoor survival; just the sort of thing every nature blogger needs to know.  Mungo Says Bah is on the beat.

- Your home for all the birding information you could want for every part in the nation, Bird Canada covers the nation from maritime provinces to western territories.

- White’s Wetlands, a tract of land that’s been owned by the same family since 1837, is not only a fine place for nature, but also a blog in and of itself, one whose authors commit to preservation of wetlands around the world.

- Nature photographer Russ Campbell posts his beautiful shots at his blog, The way I see it.

- The Great Lakes are one of the world’s most spectacular water systems, and one we share with our neighbors to the north.  North Shore Nature covers, appropriately, the north shore of Lake Superior.

- Frontenac Bird Studies, an organization seeking to do work for the protection of birds on the Frontenac Arch, a geologic feature near the New York border, has a blog.  The Fontenac Bird Studies blog has lots of great photos and information about the work they’re doing.

- If you’re interested in gorgeous, artistic nature photography (and who’s not?), Roberta Murray has some images you will really enjoy.

- I’m a birder, so QC birding 2009 with its great photos and stories of finding those birds, really appeals to me.  It seems, however, that the name is going to have to change though, and soon!

There’s plenty in Canada for the NBN community to feel thankful for, the blogs up north are plentiful and of high quality.  I hope you enjoy them!

For next week, we’ll take another look at our themed blogs.  It’s terrestrial habitat week!  I’ll be looking at the blogs that label themselves as desert, or forest, or montane, or grasslands.  I’ll be certain to include the blogs labeled as such in in the toplist, but if you think your blog or one of your favorites also fits, let me know at naswick (at) gmail (dot) com.

Till next time!

A great collection with many names new to me. I’ll enjoy browsing through the list.

And readers, don’t forget to click through to the original Canadian blogs post, where there’s an additional dozen blogs, not mentioned here, but also worth checking out!
