Way back in March, when spring was barely beginning to spread its sunny, buggy, birdy tendrils across much of the northern hemisphere, I wrote about Australian nature blogs in the NBN. What better way, thought I, to prepare that continents fine naturalists and nature writers for the sunlight deprived winter ahead that to catalog our fine colleagues from the land down under. Well, it’s apparently been a productive winter for Aussie nature bloggers, as they’ve multilplied! So much so that I should turn back to them now that spring is beginning to bring back the sunlight of the Australian summer. Plus yesterday was a Labour Day holiday for a few of the southern states, so what better time to celebrate the additional arrivals to the NBN community?
Welcome back to Australia!

- With a name like Australian Nature Photography, you kind of know what you’re getting going in . But if you’re anything like me, Australia’s nature and landscapes are so remarkable that a simple statement of purpose is enough.
- The wildlife in Australia is so novel and amazing that even a regular blog of everyday life in the country has some really cool stuff. Blog rhymes with Frog is on the beat.
- Allen and Barbara of Daintree, Queensland have taken a parcel of cleared farming land and reverted to its natural state. It goes without saying that the animals and plants they find on their piece of land wouldn’t be there otherwise. A great project documented at Green Bites.
- We’re all no doubt inspired by the natural world, it’s why we seek to write publically about it. Poetuition seeks to find the poet inside herself as she writes about the nature near Brisbane.
- There are very few self-identified fungi blogs in the NBN. One of the few, Australian Fungi, has the distinction of occupying an even smaller circle of one, Australian fungi blogs.
- Tim Dolby is trying to do a Big Year for his state of Victoria. As one who’s done a state big year myself, I certainly hope he has better luck than I did. Follow along at Tim Dolby’s Bird Trip Reports.
- In far northern Queensland, there’s a National Park that protects a good deal of Australia’s remaining tropical rainforest. Ella Bay, like so many other really wild places, is under threat from developers. Chronicle the attempt to keep Ella Bay wild at Ella Bay Forever.
- Western Australia is about as different from northern Australia as two places can be, but the wonderful WA Zoologist finds species in the western grasslands and deserts as remarkable as any in the rainforest. Plus, if you slur the name of the blog together you get Wazoologist, which sounds a lot of fun to me.

So now between the old post and this one, Australia is thoroughly covered. Enjoy the great NBN blogs of the land down under.
For next week, I’m going to re-visit another Commonwealth nation, Canada! I know for a fact I missed some Canadian blogs last time, I need to remedy that situation. Plus it’s Thanksgiving there next week. It’s my way of giving thanks for the nature of my northern neighbor and home to my colleague Seabrooke, as well.
If you’re a new Canadian blogger in the NBN, drop me a line at naswick (at) gmail (dot) com, and I’ll be happy to include you in this updated edition.
Til next time!
