Isn’t social networking redundant?

You may have read Mike’s note in the sidebar titled Social Promotion in which he says, “Nature bloggers have yet to effectively leverage the power of social promotions networks …” That comment sparked a discussion that eventually led to our starting this blog. One of my roles will be looking at different social networking tools and exploring them with the community. What’s the best way for those of us who love nature, wildlife, birds, animals, and the environment to raise our visibility, our voice, and our influence in the blogging world (which I also will refer to as the blogosphere) and eventually in the world at large?

I’ll be sharing information on the tools themselves, hints on how to use them, interviews with bloggers who use particular tools, plus questions and answers. We’ll have an opportunity to experiment together, help each other, and learn what works for us as individuals and for the community as a whole.

As part of this, I’ll be asking questions in online surveys. The surveys or polls are to help me understand what you already know and what you would like to hear more about as well as help me determine if I’m explaining concepts and details clearly.

So, back to my original question: isn’t all networking social? and isn’t all social activity a type of networking? Rather than answer those questions right now, I’m giving a link to our first survey:

Try it out. This is a bit of an experiment on my part, so let me know if you have any problems taking it or any questions about it. I’ll post the results next week, and we’ll start our discussion.

I’d always assumed that the use of the social modifier was to distinguish it from computer networks. Since so much of what we call social networking had its origins and underpinnings in the tech world, this distinction is not trivial. So no, not all networking is social, especially when geeks are involved.

That’s a good point, Jason. I’d also say that all social networking is not done electronically. I’m hoping the question will prompt others to think about networking and human connections, as it did you.
