Community Bulletin Board – September 6, 2009

Don’t forget, the NBN board isn’t just for announcing events! If you have contests or promotions, want to share a new project you’re involved in, share a cause you believe in, have items you wish to sell, want to solicit feedback from the NBN community, or anything else that might be of interest to our members, don’t hesitate to send it in! Submissions can be sent to sanderling [at] symbiotic [dot] ca, with the subject line “NBN Bulletin Board”. Don’t forget to include your blog’s name and URL. The weekly board will be posted every Sunday.

Meet-ups and Field Trips

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… the Midwest Birding Symposium on September 17-20 in Lakeside, Ohio will be the birding event of the year. This festival will also surpass all others EVER in terms of support of and emphasis on nature blogging. Have you signed up yet? If the $25 blogger discount doesn’t sweeten the pot sufficiently, how would you like to participate in the liveblogging demonstration? If you’re planning to be there, contact Mike (mike AT 10000birds DOT com) to be included in the liveblogging schedule. Let’s make sure that every one of the 800+ attendees leaves the MBS with the memory of how amazing our blogs are!

Community Participation / Web Events

International Rock-flipping Day is upon us already! Traditionally the first Sunday of September, this year it will take place on September 20th, the third Sunday. Susannah, better known as Wanderin’ Weeta, will be coordinating the event this year. In a nutshell, the goal of the day is to go out and flip a rock – or two, or three – and then blog about what you find. Send Susannah your post’s link and she’ll compile and share them all with participants. For more details on the whats, dos and don’ts of the event, and links to previous years’ results, check out Susannah’s post on IRFD.

“Real-world” Events

Do you have fun participating in citizen science projects? Enjoy learning something new while contributing to a good cause? Live in or around the Big Apple? Then you might be interested in the New York City Cricket Crawl. It takes place this coming Friday, September 11 (rain date Sept 12). Sign up as a cricket-and-katydid-counter or a collaborator, and then go out that evening to count the singing insects you hear. For more information on the event and how to sign up, visit the Discover Life NYCCC website.

The WILD Foundation’s World Wilderness Congress, also known as WILD9, is the longest running environmental forum and occurs once every four years. This year’s conference will be held the week of November 6th in Merida, Mexico, and for the first time will be bilingual (English/Spanish). Among the many topics to be discussed, it will address the first international agreement on Wilderness between US, Canadian and Mexican agencies. Additionally, it will feature premiere speakers Jane Goodall, Stephan Harding, and Pav Dukhdev, and be the largest gathering of conservation photography ever. Lastly, all sessions will be recorded and put on their website. For more information on the event, or to register your participation, visit the Wild9 website.

Contests and Promotions

Amber of Birder’s Lounge also reminds members that her photo ID challenge and Do Something! (Good) campaign are always ongoing. Some great causes benefit from both of these, so swing by and participate, if you haven’t already!
