Don’t forget, the NBN board isn’t just for announcing events! If you have contests or promotions, want to share a new project you’re involved in, share a cause you believe in, have items you wish to sell, want to solicit feedback from the NBN community, or anything else that might be of interest to our members, don’t hesitate to send it in!
Submissions can be sent to sanderling [at] symbiotic [dot] ca, with the subject line “NBN Bulletin Board”. Don’t forget to include your blog’s name and URL. The weekly board will be posted every Sunday.
Member-supported causes
Mike, the founder of this wonderful community we call the Nature Blog Network, and his fellow bloggers over at 10,000 Birds have done it again, cooking up yet another fabulous online initiative. Regular readers of 10,000 Birds may be aware of their conservation efforts to support various endangered species projects, such as the Sharpe’s Longclaw or Spoon-billed Sandpiper. Mike, Corey and Charlie are taking it one step further - by announcing a 10,000 Birds Conservation Club. Enrollment is a modest US$25 per 12 month period (365 days from time of joining). All membership funds will go towards supporting endangered species conservation projects as voted on by club members. Members, as reward for their generosity, will have the opportunity to participate in Conservation Club members-only giveaways, such as the three-book contest offering the Sound Approach to Birding anthology currently being promoted at 10,000 Birds. Sign yourself up, or buy someone a membership as a Christmas gift. Anyone can join, you don’t need to be a blogger! Learn more about the club at this page. To read the club’s FAQ, or to join, visit this page.
Remember the DonorsChoose.org challenge that ran for the month of October? Our own Wren shares that the project she chose to support as part of the challenge has been fully funded! The teacher, Ms. Miller, who happens to also be a Nature Blog Network member herself, asked for binoculars and bird field guides for her class of 34 3rd-5th graders in California. Thanks to the support of Wren, fellow NBN members, and other generous contributions, Ms. Miller’s students will be able to learn more about birds and nature this coming year. Thanks for the update, Wren, and have fun in the field, Ms. Miller!
Julie at Coffee & Conservation is encouraging bird-lovers to buy Counter Culture coffee this holiday season. For each bag of Holiday Blend sold, Counter Culture will be donating $1 to a native-tree planting program at the Finca Nueva Armenia to strengthen and diversify the native forest used to shade their coffee plantations. Julie is going to match this donation for all bags purchased by Coffee & Conservation readers. For more information, visit Julie’s post at Coffee & Conservation.
Contests and Promotions
Dave Ingram at Dave Ingram’s Natural History Blog has just produced a 2010 West Coast Wildflower Calendar featuring wildflowers from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He plans to give away one calendar to a randomly selected person who can successfully identify a mystery flower on the calendar post page. The draw date is set for November 30. That’s tomorrow! For more information, visit Dave’s blog post about it.
Amber of Birder’s Lounge also reminds members that her photo ID challenge and Do Something! (Good) campaign are always ongoing. Some great causes benefit from both of these, so swing by and participate, if you haven’t already!
