The Dragonfly Woman turned one year old on May 28th! To celebrate, Chris is giving away a hand carved and hand printed linoleum block print of an insect, a Dragonfly Woman original design. The print will be printed with black ink on white acid-free watercolor paper, matted and ready to frame. The winner has his or her choice of insects: damselfly (Argia sp.), caterpillar hunter beetle (Calisoma sp.), scarab beetle, ant (Polyrachis sp.), or giant water bug (Lethocerus medius). Entering is easy: just leave a comment at this blog post by June 4 – that’s this Friday. Chris will randomly select a winner from the entries and send the print in the mail.

Attention nature writers! (That includes every one of our 1122 members, by the way.) The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is a small nonprofit operating a writers’ residency program. Nestled on a beautiful bend in the road known as Dairy Hollow, the Colony hosts more than 50 established and emerging writers a year for residencies that vary in length from one week to three months. They are currently offering the Moondancer Fellowship, a grant covering the costs of a full 4-week (or two 2-week) residency for writing about nature and the outdoors. Applications must be postmarked by June 15, 2010, in order to be considered, or may also be submitted online or by email by the same date. You can find out more about the writers’ residency here, and information on the fellowship can be found here.

Help us id this snake seen at Sullivan’s Is. SC to the right of Ft. Moultrie on the beach. He was hiding in the rocks. A mocking bird drew our attention by fretting around the rocks. It finally came out and was 4 to 5 feet long with tannish/green horizontal stripes. He crawled like a sidewinder through exposed rootes up a shrub to get the bird eggs? The bird was agressively going after it when if left the brush. Was it a crayfish snake?
