Member-supported Causes
On June 12 and 13, next weekend, myself and my boyfriend, the coordinator of Frontenac Bird Studies, will be participating in a 24-hour bioblitz fundraiser of Frontenac Provincial Park in southern Ontario. We will be camping at a wilderness site within the park, along with two other teams/couples, and will spend 24 hours trying to document as many species as we can within the park boundaries. Our goal is to try to record 500 species of plants, animals and invertebrates within that timeframe. The incredible biodiversity of Frontenac Provincial Park, a near-wilderness area that is home to many Species at Risk including one of the province’s highest densities of Cerulean Warbler and other rare species such as the West Virginia White butterfly and Ontario’s only lizard, the Five-lined Skink, should make this goal easily attainable. You can bet that we’ll both be blogging about all the incredible things we find.
We are looking for donations and sponsorships toward our bioblitz, with 100% of funds raised going toward operating costs of Frontenac Bird Studies. Surprisingly, despite the uniqueness of the region, FBS is the first to undertake any sort of meaningful research within the park and its surroundings. Last year, 2009, was the first year of studies, with 2010 looking to expand upon last year’s success. Already this year FBS has located several pairs, including one nest, of Louisiana Waterthrush, a rare Species at Risk in Ontario, restricted to just a few locations in the province. You can read more about FBS and the work they do, or pledge a donation to the 2010 Bioblitz, at their website, or keep up-to-date on the latest from the field at their blog.
Nature Tours and Retreats
Attention nature writers! (That includes every one of our 1122 members, by the way.) The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is a small nonprofit operating a writers’ residency program. Nestled on a beautiful bend in the road known as Dairy Hollow, the Colony hosts more than 50 established and emerging writers a year for residencies that vary in length from one week to three months. They are currently offering the Moondancer Fellowship, a grant covering the costs of a full 4-week (or two 2-week) residency for writing about nature and the outdoors. Applications must be postmarked by June 15, 2010, in order to be considered, or may also be submitted online or by email by the same date. You can find out more about the writers’ residency here, and information on the fellowship can be found here.
