Community Bulletin Board - December 6, 2009

Don’t forget, the NBN board isn’t just for announcing events! If you have contests or promotions, want to share a new project you’re involved in, share a cause you believe in, have items you wish to sell, want to solicit feedback from the NBN community, or anything else that might be of interest to our members, don’t hesitate to send it in!

Submissions can be sent to sanderling [at] symbiotic [dot] ca, with the subject line “NBN Bulletin Board”. Don’t forget to include your blog’s name and URL. The weekly board will be posted every Sunday.

Member-supported causes

Unless you join the frogs and chipmunks and go into hibernation for the winter, you’ll probably be aware of the approach of Christmas, now just 20 days away. If you’re like me and try not to think about Christmas until December, there’s a good chance you haven’t completed your Christmas shopping yet. Still looking for ideas for your favourite nature-lover? Try checking out The Nature Conservancy’s holiday gift guide. Adopt an Acre of wilderness in Africa, or a coral reef in Papua New Guinea. Plant a tree in Brazil or buy carbon offsets. Give them a gift membership or shop the TNC marketplace for green merchandise.

Speaking of gift-giving ideas, last week we mentioned that Mike, NBN founder and blogger at 10,000 Birds have started a great new initiative - the 10,000 Birds Conservation Club. Enrollment is a modest US$25 per 12 month period (365 days from time of joining), and memberships make a great gift. All membership funds will go towards supporting endangered species conservation projects as voted on by club members. Members will have the opportunity to participate in Conservation Club members-only giveaways. Learn more about the club at this page. To read the club’s FAQ, or to join, visit this page.

And don’t forget, Julie at Coffee & Conservation is encouraging bird-lovers to buy Counter Culture coffee this holiday season. For each bag of Holiday Blend sold, Counter Culture will be donating $1 to a native-tree planting program at the Finca Nueva Armenia to strengthen and diversify the native forest used to shade their coffee plantations. Julie is going to match this donation for all bags purchased by Coffee & Conservation readers. Shade-grown coffee makes a delicious gift, and is a great way to introduce a coffee drinker to shade-grown blends. For more information, visit Julie’s post at Coffee & Conservation.

Contests and Promotions

Amber of Birder’s Lounge also reminds members that her photo ID challenge and Do Something! (Good) campaign are always ongoing. Some great causes benefit from both of these, so swing by and participate, if you haven’t already!
